Our commitment
Relatably respects the intellectual property of others and asks users to do the same. Because the tools run in the browser, most images are created and stored by users on their own devices, and we do not host them. When content that we do host or that users share through us infringes a copyright, we remove it once we receive a valid notice. This policy follows the general framework of the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act and similar laws elsewhere.
Use content responsibly
Before you upload a photo or image, make sure you own it or have a license to use it. When you add a quotation, credit the author where known. Our guide on how to credit a quote is part of our editorial standards, and uploading an image you do not have rights to is not allowed under our terms of use.
How to file a copyright notice
If you are a copyright owner or an agent acting for one, and you believe content on or shared through the site infringes your copyright, send us a written notice that includes all of the following:
| Required element | Example |
|---|---|
| Identification of the work | A description or link to your original work |
| Identification of the infringing material | The exact Relatably URL or location |
| Your contact details | Name, email, and address |
| A good faith statement | That the use is not authorized by you, your agent, or the law |
| An accuracy statement | That the notice is accurate, under penalty of perjury |
| Your signature | A physical or electronic signature |
Where to send it
Send your notice through the contact page and choose the copyright topic. The operator of Relatably acts as the point of contact for copyright notices. A notice that is missing the required elements may not be valid and may delay our response.
What happens after a valid notice
When we receive a complete and valid notice, we review it and remove or disable access to the material that is the subject of the notice. Where appropriate, we notify the person who provided the material so they can respond.
Counter notice
If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake or that you have the right to use it, you may send a counter notice. It should identify the removed material and its former location, include your contact details, and include a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification, along with your signature. If we receive a valid counter notice, we may restore the material unless the original complainant takes legal action.
Repeat infringers
We may limit or remove access for users who repeatedly infringe the copyrights of others.
Trademark concerns
If you believe your trademark is being used on the site in a way that infringes your rights, contact us with details of the mark, the registration if any, and the location of the content, and we will review it.
AI generated examples
Some example backgrounds shown on the site are AI generated and are labeled where shown. We do not present them as real photographs. See our editorial standards in the terms of use for how we handle this.
Good faith and misrepresentation
Filing a false or bad faith notice can carry legal consequences. Under the law, a person who knowingly misrepresents that material is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, may be liable for damages. Please only submit a notice if you have a genuine, good faith belief.
